Lovers’ Tree

There’s a huge tree in the woods in our backyard. It’s old and dead, and is really more of a very tall stump. From what I can tell, it’s a smorgasbord for birds, as they feast on the bugs that have overtaken what was once a beautiful living fixture in a thriving forest. The bark is falling off, there are holes everywhere, yet it still stands majestically in the middle of our woods.

I noticed one day, the remains of a heart that had been carved into this tree’s bark long, long ago. It must’ve been done when the tree was fairly young, because now it was up high, and the tree had obviously grown significantly taller since the lovers had created their artwork.

It got me thinking. Where is this couple now? Had their love survived better than their carving had, which was now barely visible? When they declared their unending love for each other, did they count on the fact that this tree might someday not be here? Had they considered the insects that would work to destroy their promise of love? I wonder if they wrote it on something more permanent. Like a marriage certificate. Or on their hearts.

I know God was smiling as He reminded me of HIS love for me, and how it’s neverending and unconditional. Nothing can get in the way of His love for me. Nothing. It will weather every storm. No bugs can destroy it. His love never fails. Ever.

His smile is so romantic.

Keep my words…write them on the tablet of your heart. — Proverbs 7:1-3
